ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION OF CATTLE AND BUFFALOES

Artificial Insemination amongst bovine is presently catered from over 5000 AI centers of all kinds i.e., Government, private, co-operatives, NGOs etc. The activities are supported by three Frozen Semen Production Stations (Frozen Semen Bull Stations or Sperm Stations), nine liquid nitrogen plants and nineteen frozen semen banks (one in each district HQ and one in Kolkata). Performance in respect of Artificial Insemination for the year 2003-2004, district and agency-wise has been narrated in tghe following table. It will be evident from the following table that average number of AI per unit during the year as a whole was around 250.

It is clear from the contents of the table that 1.94 lakh female calves were born during 2003-2004 which will mean nearly around 1.55 lakh more cross breed cows for the State.

LIQUID NITROGEN PLANTS

We have nine liquid nitrogen plants:

1.    JALPAIGURI in Jalpaiguri district.
2.    MALDA in Malda district.
3.    BURDWAN in Burdwan district.
4.    BISHNUPUR in Bankura district.
5.    SALBONI in Paschim Medinipur district.
6.    HARINGHATA in Nadia district.
7.    BELGACHIA-I in Kokata.
8.    BELGACHIA-II in Kolkata    &
9.    KAKDWIP in South 24 Parganas district.

The available manpower strength permits limited operation of the plants. Besides, breakdown, load shedding, mechanical defects, voltage fluctuations etc. are main obstacles in the way of optimum production. In case of production of Frozen Semen doses dearth of quality bulls is the main hindrance.

All the LN Plants except Kakdwip were established under the Government of India scheme 'Technology Mission Development Department Programme' during Eighth Plan period. The Kakdwip LN Plant was established in the year 1999-2000. All the Plants have the production capacity of 8-10 liter per hour. Production figures of LN plants for the year 2003-2004 are presented in the following table.

FROZEN SEMEN BULL STATION

Procurement, production and distribution of breeding inputs like Frozen Semen doses, liquid nitrogen, other accessories etc. are our prime activities. At this stage we have three Frozen Semen Bull Stations.

We have already taken steps to get the IS-9000 mark for the three FS Stations with the active support and help from Bureau of Indian Standards, Kolkata.

1.     HARINGHATA in NADIA district
2.    SALBONI in PASCHIM MEDINIPUR district
3.    BELDANGA in MURSHIDABAD district

Finally, it should be kept in mind that despite limitations and constraints, we have made remarkable achievements in the field of AI which resulted in enhanced milk production. AI figures were just 2.43 Lakh in 1976-1977 which rose to 11.81 Lakh in 2003-2004 and estimated production of milk was to the tune of 10.64 Lakh MT in 1976-1977 which is estimated to be 37.05 Lakh MT (P) in 2003-2004 and per capita availability of milk per day is now 122 grams.
